When you’re invited to a white elephant exchange, you can generally expect the following. Everyone gathers and brings a wrapped present for the pool. At the start of the exchange, each person draws a number from a hat to determine the order in which gifts are chosen.
The person who draws “1” gets to pick first, unwrapping it in front of everyone so all can see what’s inside. During each person’s turn, they can choose a wrapped gift from the pool or “steal” one from someone else. To keep the game moving, only three steals are allowed per gift.
Once everyone has a gift, the first person has the chance to steal a present from someone else. If they decide to keep their original gift, the game is over. If they steal, it ends when someone else finally declines to steal a gift.
Keep in mind that the rules can vary depending on the group you’re playing with. Some prefer to hold the exchange in January, after the holidays, to help get rid of unwanted gifts. In these cases, Jodi RR Smith, etiquette expert and president of Mannersmith, notes that participants often bring in something they weren’t keen on but that someone else might appreciate.
Other ideas include only bringing homemade items or gifts under $10. Since there are so many ways to play, Smith advises asking your host in advance.
It’s not necessarily the case. It’s best to tailor your gift to the attendees of the exchange. For close friends, you may want to consider inside jokes and other humorous references that will elicit laughter. For groups you’re less familiar with, a practical gift might be the safer choice (you’re bound to find a baker in the group).
If you’re at a loss, think about what you have in common. “You know the people who will be at the party, and you can cater to the crowd,” Smith says. After all, a thoughtful gift that reflects your relationship with those at the party will be cherished by everyone.
And if you’re truly stumped, Smith suggests some safe bets, including beeswax candle sticks, attractive stationery, a box of chocolates, lottery tickets, or even a small bottle of rum if it’s appropriate for the crowd.
