Renewing a space on a shoestring budget can be achieved with subtle, purposeful adjustments that can yield impressive results. These budget-conscious transformations don’t necessitate a total overhaul or a significant financial outlay. “There are numerous simple and cost-effective solutions—just keep in mind, simplicity is key,” advises Texas-based interior stylist Jena Salmon. The essence lies in intentionality: concentrating on textures, hues, lighting, and character-infused details that inject vitality into a room.

To illustrate the ease and effectiveness of budget-conscious enhancements, we queried five Southern designers about their preferred methods for revitalizing a room without breaking the bank. Their expert-approved tips range from swapping out light fixtures to layering fabrics, offering impactful ways to reshape your space, be it with a budget of $15 or $500.

Salmon, who advocates for a touch of elegance on a side table, recommends a tablecloth from Ballard Designs or a DIY duct tape solution for a custom fit. “It’s all about adding that touch of sophistication without a hefty expense,” she advises.

Coastal decorator Amanda Lindroth prefers chic Roman shades to dress up curtains, a cost-effective way to introduce an air of globetrotting charm. “Adding depth and texture, like with window treatments, can elevate any space,” she explains.

Paint, Salmon asserts, is a game-changer. “Painting is a powerful tool for transformation, but choose your method wisely. Opt for a full room or trim only, but never an accent wall,” she advises.

According to Gabriela Eisenhart, Founder of Silo Studio Design in Atlanta, “Paint and lighting are the best allies when funds are tight. A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into a room instantly, making it feel more welcoming.” Dirty walls can diminish the inviting nature of a home, she adds.

Eisenhart also emphasizes the impact of lighting. “Poor lighting can drastically alter the ambiance of a room and your mood. Consider swapping bulbs for a warmer tone and installing a dimmer switch for mood control,” she suggests.

Atlanta designer Liz Williams loves to swap lampshades for a quick facelift. “A new shade can transform a lamp and, by extension, the room, with just a simple detail that feels personal and custom,” she comments.

Mallory Robins and Elizabeth Bennett of Kobel + Co. explain that layering different types of lighting, like table lamps, sconces, or floor lamps, can create cozy, inviting spaces without a large financial commitment. “Think of it as styling with light, a soft glow that can completely change the mood and appearance of your room,” they suggest.

Williams also suggests changing out area rugs as a budget-friendly update. “A new rug can instantly redefine the mood of a space, adding texture, warmth, and color without needing a complete redesign,” she notes.

The Kobel + Co. team recommends affordable custom rugs. “Custom doesn’t have to be intimidating. A simple, low-cost carpet, like sisal, tailored to your room’s dimensions, can elevate your space without straining your budget. Layering a vintage rug over a new one can add color and pattern at a low cost,” they advise.

“Pillows are like your room’s wardrobe,” according to Kobel + Co. “Invest in a quality insert and change the covers seasonally to refresh your space without a complete overhaul.” This trick is effective in any room setting.

Salmon advocates for fresh flowers or plants as a quick, budget-friendly way to brighten up your home. “They add a burst of life and biophilic design can help purify the air. Trader Joe’s has a great selection of flowers that can be placed in various vessels around the house,” she suggests. “Flowers make me happy. They bring a smile to my face,” she concludes.
